Pitch for Reading is Cool Charleston Battery Campaign

To: Paul Bowers [pbowers@postandcourier.com]

Subject line: Charleston Battery Reading Campaign

Hello Paul!

I’m Cheyenne Abrams, The Charleston Battery’s newest PR director and I have a great story idea for you!

Charleston Battery will be hosting a reading campaign with inner-city Charleston elementary schools to improve literacy and encourage reading among students.

As you have reported, Charleston's third-graders have had a tough time passing the reading portion of the standardized test, putting many in danger of failing third grade.

This gives students an opportunity to make reading fun, while also succeeding in reading and literacy.

The Charleston Battery feels very strongly about this cause and looks forward to working with students throughout the month of November.

I have attached the press release for you. Let me know if there’s anything else you may need.

I look forward to working with you in the future,

Cheyenne Abrams

Charleston Battery Partners with Elementary Schools for Reading Campaign

CHARLESTON –

The Charleston Battery is partnering with elementary schools in the Charleston Promise Neighborhood for a Reading is Cool campaign during November.

The campaign will consist of two separate efforts:

Just For Kicks will be held at the main library downtown. Every weekday between 9-11 a.m., two Battery players will read with the second-graders.

Battery Book Bonanza is a book drive to collect new and like-new books to the CPN schools. Drop-off locations will be at all Charleston county libraries branches. donations for new books will also be accepted online via www.batterybookbonanza.com.

In 2016, over 25-percent of the state’s third-graders failed the language and reading section of the South Carolina standardized test, SC READY. This emphasizes a need for literacy and reading practice throughout the Charleston area.

“Kids need to be motivated. They don’t have a lot of role models at home, but professional athletes provide a great role model of how to be successful doing something these kids know is fun. Having our local pro soccer players encourage these kids to work hard in school and on the field will be a tremendous motivator,” said Anthony Dixon, principal of Sanders-Clyde Elementary. “It is about time our athletes help us point out what is most important for these children.”

A quality childhood education is a personal passion of the team’s president Andrew Bell, but players are also motivated to begin working with the Peninsula’s students.

“I really believe it is important for kids to be good readers. I grew up a migrant worker and learned to read as a teenager, so I know what it’s like to miss out on opportunities because you can’t read,” said Justin Portillo, a Charleston Battery midfielder. “Thanks to a soccer coach in Louisiana, I learned to read, and it changed my life.”
